Peculiar places 100-day moratorium on data centers

By Laurie Bassett

PECULIAR – The Peculiar Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Monday evening to place a 100-day moratorium on data centers, not accepting plans, reviewing, permitting, etcetera during this period.

A standing-room only crowd of 60 people in the council chambers watched as board members called this temporary halt to a data center coming to Peculiar.

The consensus was that there needs to be more research and possibly some code and/or zoning changes before moving forward with such a project.

The moratorium will end on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at which time the Board could vote to extend it if more time is needed.

In other business, both readings were unanimously approved to set the 2024 Tax Levy at $0.901 per $100 of assessed valuation. This breaks down into $0.3792 for General Revenue and $0.5218 for Debt Service.

There were two second readings. An Intergovernmental Cooperative Agreement with the Emergency Services Board for records management and CAD System was approved. The rezoning was also approved for a narrow strip of approximately 1.77 acres to the west and north of City Hall from C-1 General Commercial to R-1 Single Family Residential as a part of the proposed Meadowbrook Subdivision. Both were approved in a 6-0 vote.

Budget discussion continued during the work session, this time focusing on the Capital Improvement Plan Budget.

The two items discussed were the Street Preservation Program and the Street Sign Replacement Program.

It was announced that the next meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 5 (due to Labor Day being on Monday) will begin at 6, rather than 6:30.

Peculiar Chief of Police Don Sheppard spoke at the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Washington, D.C. last week. City Administrator Mickey Ary told aldermen being chosen for that is a great honor.

City Clerk Melissa Paith has resigned. Her last day will be Sept. 13.

Director of Development Services Roger Kroh is planning to retire at the end of the year. He will overlap with the new Director October through December to ensure a smooth transition.
