Belton Middle School teacher Alan Geels has been the assistant soccer coach at Belton High School for 27 years.
After the boys’ season ended, Head Coach Jared Smith told the other GKC Suburban Conference coaches the program wouldn’t be what it is or where it is without Geels’ dedication and commitment.
Smith told the coaches if they were considering voting for him, which often happens when the team is also the Conference champ, to instead cast their votes for Geels. The ballot decision was unanimous and Geels was named Conference Coach of the Year.
Geels was unable to attend the recent team banquet when they’d planned to surprise him with this award, so the team and parents were able to keep this on the down low . . . until after school on Thursday.
